Peoples Democratic Party candidate Atiku Abubakar has admitted that Peter Obi’s votes in last Saturday’s presidential election did major damage to the PDP.

Answering questions from journalists at his first media briefing on Thursday in Abuja, Atiku suggested it would have been different without Obi, as the votes gotten by the Labour Party in the southeast and south south part of the country would ordinarily have been voting for the PDP.

“Yes agreed it is a fact, he took our votes in the southeast and south-south and that of course would not make him president”.

Peter Obi secured landslide votes in the five states of the southeast, winning also in the Niger Delta states of Cross River, Edo, and Delta, which are considered traditional bases of the PDP.

While insisting that Obi would need to secure substantial votes in other places to win the presidency, Atiku did not rule out an alliance with Peter Obi.

“Peter (Obi) is welcomed to dialogue with PDP. I don’t think we would have any problem if he wants to dialogue with PDP either form an alliance or not”.
