Nigeria finally gets National Media Complaints Commission

The Nigerian Media is set to institute the National Media Complaints Commission to act as an ombudsman to ensure prompt resolution of issues bothering ethical breaches in the industry.

The nine-member committee to be inaugurated on Monday, April 3, 2023, is drawn from the media, the Bar, academia, and Civil Society to serve as an independent forum to maintain high standards of Nigerian Journalism and defend the freedom of the press.

The process is being driven by the Nigeria Press Organisation, NPO comprising of Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria, NPAN; the Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE; and the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ. Others are the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria, BON; Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, and the Civil Society.

Members of the Commission to be Inaugurated include former Managing Director of Guardian Newspapers as Chairman; former President of Nigerian Bar Association, Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud; Deputy Vice Chancellor, (Academics) of Paul University, Awka in Anambra State, Professor Chinyere Stella Okunna; Development Specialist and Country Director of Care International (Nigeria), Dr. Hussain Abdu.

Others are the Editor-in-Chief of Diamond Publications Limited and Founder, of Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME), Lanre Idowu; Executive Director, of Media Rights Agenda, MRA, Edetaen Ojo; Journalist, Lawyer, and Arbitrator, Dupe Ajayi-Gbadebo; Broadcaster, Author, and Columnist, Eugenia Abu and Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Information.
