ECOWAS Parliament

Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Siddie Tunis, wants member states to enforce policies and regulations that will ensure energy efficiency in the sub-region with a view to improving the living standards of the people.

Tunis gave the advice during the closing ceremony of the delocalized meeting of the ECOWAS Parliament in Freetown, Sierra Leone which focused on ways to address the energy crisis in the sub-region.

The high-level Freetown meeting of the ECOWAS Parliament was to keep regional Parliamentarians informed about the community’s actions toward energy efficiency in the sub-region.

Experts drawn from different energy sectors made presentations on topics relevant to energy efficiency in West Africa and brought to the awareness of the ECOWAS Parliament some of the challenges linked to energy performance in the region.

The energy experts also came up with various recommendations including the need for regional governments to create a platform for continued engagements with private sector operators to reduce electricity tariffs and create necessary political and legal frameworks for supporting private sector operators in the field of electricity.

In his closing remarks, Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Sidie Tunis, said there was a need for the Authority of Head of States and Governments to be more committed to promoting energy efficiency which he said represents one of the most powerful forces that can improve lives, strengthen communities and fast-track the self-reliance of the region.
