Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo has appealed to the chief clerk of the central criminal court, in the United Kingdom to intervene in the current travails of Senator Ike Ekwerenmadu and his wife after being convicted for conspiring and facilitating the travel of a 21-year old man with the intent of harvesting his organ for their daughter who has a kidney ailment

In a letter signed by the former head of state and addressed to the clerk, Obasanjo condemned the act noting that it can’t be tolerated in any sane or civilized society.

The letter reads in part. ” It is my fervent desire that for the very warm relations between the United Kingdom and Federal Republic of Nigeria; for his position as one of the distinguished senators in the Nigerian parliament, and also for the sake of their daughter in question whose current health condition is in danger and requires an urgent medical attention, you will use your good office to intervene and appeal to the court and the government of the United Kingdom to be magnanimous enough to temper justice with mercy and let punishment that may have to come from the UK, take their good character, parental instinct and care into consideration”.

The former president added that Ekweremadu and his wife have learnt from the distressing experience and hopes it guides their future actions or inactions.
