World Bank partners Cross River State on erosion control

Lives may henceforth be safe at the dreaded gully site in Ikot Nkebre community in Cross River State, South-South Nigeria where over 10 persons lost their lives in the last 10 years.

This is because the World Bank is partnering with the Cross River State Government to reduce the incidents of landslide and floods in 10 communities in the State.

The project which is an intervention of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP, has commenced rebuilding of the erosion sites in a bid to make lives and properties in the area safe.

Speaking during inspection of the work which is put at 70%, the Project Consultant from the World Bank, Ayo Adedeji, said the counterpart funds released by the Cross River State Government made the success story of the project possible as structured by the World Bank.

Residents of the community who commended the World Bank and administration of Governor Ben Ayade for the intervention after 14 years, called on the World Bank to consider their compensation plans as agreed.

The World Bank assisted project, NEWMAP is to reduce vulnerability to soil erosion, gully environment and is targeted at sub-catchment areas including 10 communities in Cross River State.
