Nigerian President, Muhamamdu Buhari

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has called on the opposition to move on as its loss in the 2023 general election was based on overconfidence and complacency.

The Minister in a statement on Sunday also said that President Muhamamdu Buhari deserves accolades as he delivered the best elections in Nigeria’s history as evident in losing his home state and other strongholds of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Mohammed noted that the opposition shot itself in the leg by relying on social media propaganda and faulty opinion polls that gave them false hope of victory. He said the APC Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu won the February 25 election fair and square clinching the majority of vote cast and surpassing the constitutional requirement of 25% in at least two-thirds of all the states in the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The Minister’s statement appears to be a direct response to the reaction of opposition parties to the comment made by President Buhari when he received members of the Progressive Governors’ Forum at the Presidential Villa on Thursday, April 27. He had said the opposition was a victim of overconfidence as the ruling party was working hard to retain power in the just concluded 2023 elections while “They were already telling their foreign backers that they would defeat the APC”

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in its reaction to the President’s comment called for international sanctions and travel ban against him after he would have handed over power on May 29. It accused President Buhari of “superintending over the rigging” of the February 25, 2023, Presidential election adjudged across Nigeria and globally as the worst in the history of the country.

In the opinion of the PDP, President Buhari made comments that apparently sought “to bully, blackmail and influence the judiciary and the outcome of the petition pending before the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal.
