Benue Governor sacks SUBEB management over fraud allegations

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has effected a major shakeup in the education sector with the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, being the first to be affected.

The Secretary of the Board and four directors as well as Advisers to the Governor were affected in the first restructuring exercise geared towards providing quality basic education in the State.

The affected directors include Adanu Eigege of Social Mobilisation, Margaret Bija of Academic Services, Ochima Ogbu, and Fidelis Ikye of Planning, Research, and Statistics, as well as Accounts and Finance respectively.

They are to report to the Office of the State Head of Service for redeployment.

Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Basic Education was also redeployed to the Ministry of Education as Special Adviser while Sarwuan Tarnongu takes over from him as Special Adviser on SUBEB, with the Principal Special Assistant to the Governor on SUBEB, David Tsevende moved to the Ministry of Health and Human Services.

Secretary of the Board, Ben Ikwe, had been appointed Principal Special Assistant to the Governor on SUBEB, while the Permanent Secretary Bureau of Service Welfare in the Office of the Head of Service, Andrew Amee now takes over as Board Secretary.

Dennis Shemberga, who was Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on SUBEB was also redeployed to the Social Investment Office.

Governor Ortom, who directed the Commissioner for Education, Professor Dennis Ityavyar, to ensure that the changes were immediately effected and feedback given to him, assured management of the Board of his administration’s support to reposition the agency.

Directors in charge of Administration and Supply, Quality Assurance and Internal Audit, Terna Ayu, Dooshima Jibo, and Sunday Tov respectively have retained their positions.

The Governor stated that further decisions and changes would be effected at the end of investigations into fraud allegations, even as he urged all to give truthful testimonies that would help unravel the rot in the system, adding that there would be no witch-hunting of any sort.
