The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has ordered the Director General, Directorate of State Security Service and the Service to immediately grant unrestricted access to the lawyers and family members of the suspended CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele

Justice Hamza Muazu gave the order following an application by Emefiele against the Attorney General of the Federation, the DG of DSS and the State security service.

Emefiele’s counsel, Joseph Daudu, while stating that visitation by his lawyers and family members is within the suspended CBN governor’s constitutional right, also informed the court that he has written letters to the DSS, particularly on the June 14, 2023, for the purpose of taking further instruction from Emefiele, but the DSS refused to respond to the application.

The court while giving its order on Friday noted that “the lawyers of the Applicant shall have access to the Applicant Immediately and regularly, at reasonable time, pending the determination of the Application”.

The court therefore adjourned to June 20, 2023 for hearing of the substantive suit.

The order is coming barely two weeks after President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele as CBN governor and was subsequently taken into custody by the DSS.
