Some angry students of the Federal University of Gusau, FUGUS, have blocked the Gusau-Funtua-Zaria and Sokoto highways to protest against the abduction of five of their colleagues at Sabon Gida Community by suspected terrorists on Friday night.

The students who came out at 8 a.m. in large numbers blocked the road, leaving motorists stranded as a result.

They were determined to protest all day long until the authorities concerned took measures to secure the freedom of their colleagues and prevent the future occurrence of the ugly situation in the troubled host community of the institution.

This is not the first time that students of FUGUS have been whisked away by suspected terrorists in the Sabon Gida community, where some of the students are staying off campus.

It took the intervention of the military, who were deployed to the scene of the protest, to calm the students down and leave the highway to allow motorists to ply to their destination.

The Zamfara State Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent, ASP Yazid Abubakar, said the police have not yet received any information concerning the abduction of the students of the Federal University, Gusau.

He told AIT News that he would find out from the Police Division in charge of the troubled community.

Efforts to reach the Federal University of Gusau’s management proved abortive as the Dean of Students Affairs, Dr Lawal Sa’ad, and the Public Relations Officer did not respond to calls put to them.
