Gender equality for a World of opportunities

The federal government has identified equitable and secured land right for women and the vulnerable as critical to achieving land restoration in the country.

At a national dialogue to mark the 2023 world desertification and drought day in Abuja, the permanent secretary Ministry of Environment Ibrahim Yusufu outlined the vital role women play in keeping the land healthy but expressed concern that the society has not allowed women to own and have control over land.

The federal government is using the national dialogue organized in commemoration of the 2023 World Desertification and Drought Day to advance women’s right to land ownership as laws and customs do not allow women to own or have control over land thereby negating the contributions of women to land restoration.

With the theme “HER LAND, HER RIGHT: Advancing Gender Equality and Land Restoration Goal, discussions at this event centered on how to facilitate responsible land governance and ownership right for women as panacea for addressing land degradation.

As the world pushes for gender equality in the political and economic spheres, it is imperative to also ensure gender inclusiveness in land governance if the world must achieve land neutrality, sustainable livelihood, and the welfare of every human being.
