Calabar Boat Mishap: Gov. Otu Orders Indefinite Suspension Of Operations At Marina Resort

Ill-fated Calabar cruise boat

Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu has directed that all boat operations including cruise boats and other activities at the Marina Resort be suspended until further notice.

Caption- A statement signed by his chief Press Secretary the Governor, Emmanuel Ogbeche, also called for a dialogue between the boat operators and the management of the State Tourism Bureau in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government this Tuesday, June 27th, 2023 by 12 pm.

The statement directed the State Ministry of Transport to immediately cross-check the safety standards and conditions of all boats operating in the Calabar waterways.

According to the statement, the Police should speed up their investigations of the fatal boat accident and prosecute those found culpable to serve as
Deterrent to others.

Three medical students; two from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and one from the University of Uyo Akwa Ibom State, are feared dead after their boat capsized at Marina Resort waterways in Calabar, Cross River State.

The incident occured on Saturday with 15 passengers, including 13 medical students, in the cruise boat.

Ten of the medical students were rescued by Navy team and other local divers.
