Hoodlums suspected to be militants in Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State, South-South Nigeria, have killed a police inspector at a checkpoint and made away with his AK-47 rifle.

According to a source, the militants who came in their numbers drove a Toyota Camry saloon car, stormed the checkpoint and started shooting and beating the three policemen on duty at the entry point of Bakassi Local Government Area before their bullets killed an inspector who led the Unit.

Eyewitness account who preferred anonymity explained that the suspected militants had gone with the riffle long before the re-enforcement of police and other security agencies arrived in the area.

The Chairman of Bakassi Local Government, Iyadim Amboni Iyadim, who confirmed the incident, said a joint security meeting has been held hours after the incident occurred, to re-strategize the security arrangement in the local government.

Iyadim explained that part of the resolutions at the meeting was that every checkpoint must be a joint effort with other security agencies including the Nigeria Army.

Also, the State Security Adviser, Ani Esin, described the situation as unfortunate, assuring the people of Bakassi of the government effort to fortify the security architecture of the Local Government Area.

Effort to speak with the police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, was unsuccessful as repeated calls to her phone were not picked.
