A three-storey building located at number 90, Nkwere street, by Umuchu road in Umuahia, Abia State has collapsed rendering the occupants homeless.
According to eyewitnesses, residents of the building were evacuated by the Umuahia Capital Development Authority, who barricaded the area when the building suddenly started cracking and eventually collapsed.
The General Manager, Umuahia Capital development Authority, Enyinnaya Nwokonta, said the collapsed building was erected about 25 years ago with substandard materials.
According to him, occupants of the building initially refused evacuating the building after it was sealed by the authority.

Reacting the Chairman, Nigeria Institute of Building, Abia State, John Oguere, described the incident as unfortunate, adding that professionals empowered by law to construct buildings in Nigeria are not engaged in constructions.
No death nor injuries were recorded in the incident.
