Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri has directed the Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Health to commence necessary processes for immediate procurement of bio-safety cabinet and other critical medical equipment for the setting up of a testing centre for Covid-19 samples in the state. This follows the increasing cases of the virus and backlog of samples due to the absence of a testing laboratory in the State.

Governor Diri who spoke at an expanded meeting of the State’s Covid-19 Task Force in Yenagoa, also said the restriction on inter-state movement by the Presidency and intrastate movement by the State Government from 10 pm to 4 am daily were still in force.

The numbers of Covid-19 cases in Bayelsa State has risen to 234 as at July 2 with 81 of the cases being health workers.

Following the rise in number of positive cases and related deaths, the Governor called for the enlarged meeting of the State Covid-19 Task Force to review reports and deploy stringent measures to secure the lives of its citizens from the pandemic.

The Governor also wants full adherence to the inter and intrastate movement restrictions from the hours of 10pm to 4am daily as well as directed intensified screening of persons at all entry points after the lifting of ban on inter-state movement.
