Over 400 pharmaceutical shops in Imo State, South-East Nigeria have been closed down for selling fake and substandard drugs to members of the public. Some of the shop owners are also said to be operating in poor environment and unapproved premises.

The Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria, PCN clamped down on drug dispensers as part of measures to save the public, especially during this period of Covid-19 pandemic.

Some of the areas visited by the enforcement team are Douglas Market in Owerri Municipal, Ohaji Egbema, Okigwe and Orlu Local Government Areas. At the popular Douglas Market there was a mild drama as the enforcement team arrested some defaulters.

DIRECTOR of ENFORCEMENT OF THE COUNCIL, STEPHEN ESUMOBI frowned at the sharp practices by the illegal drug dealers. The team earlier in a briefing warned drug dealers to register their businesses to prevent quackery.

Meanwhile, residents have been cautioned to avoid adulterated drugs and safeguard their lives.
