As Nigeria joins the rest of the globe to mark the world population day, some psychologists have called on the Federal and States Government to
create awareness against rape and other gender-based violence in the country
.

Speaking to AIT in port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, the psychologists urged government at all levels to put drastic measures in places to nip the ugly trend of rape and gender- based violence in the bud.

The experts say that the spike in rape cases attributed to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, is capable of portraying the country in bad light before the international community.

The theme for this year’s world population day is Safeguarding the health and rights of women and girls around the world especially during the time of COVID-19.

A report published on July 8, 2020 by the United Nations population fund estimated that 47 million women in low and middle-income countries may not have access to modern contraceptives which will in turn lead to 7million unintended pregnancies and rise in female genital mutilation and child marriages.

While they appreciated the authorities towards slowing down the spread of the deadly coronavirus pandemic, and call for the same effort to be given to other health issues.
