The Presidency has warned that those who see the investigation of the embattled Economic and Financial Crimes Commission boss Ibrahim Magu as a sign of weakness in the present administration’s fight against corruption to think twice.

In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu, the Presidency noted that There is no better indication to show it’s seriousness in the fight than the will to investigate allegations in an open and transparent manner against those charged with the custody of the very system.

It added that Under the Buhari administration , the fight against corruption is a mantra and guiding principle and There are no sacred cows while those who think they have a halo over their heads have their days also numbered.

The statement further read that Magu was not immuned – and regardless of the obvious embarrassment that potential acts of wrongdoing by him, given the office he held, may appear for the government.

The Presidential spokesman added that A series of documented allegations were made against the Ag. Chairman of the EFCC and Following a preliminary review of the allegations leveled against him and several other members of his staff, there were grounds for a detailed investigation to be conducted.

The Presidency explained that an investigative panel was constituted in compliance with the extant laws governing such a body and the suspension of Ibrahim Magu therefore was to allow the institution to continue carrying out its mandate without the cloud of investigation hanging over its head.\

Contrary to reports, Garba Shehu states that Magu has the opportunity to defend himself and answer the allegations against him. The Statement said that this is how it should be, as under the Laws of Nigeria every citizen is presumed and remains innocent until proven guilty.
