The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, WTO, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, wants the Nigeria Diaspora Commission,(NiDCOM), to strengthen systematic mechanisms, to attract second and third-generation Nigerians in the Diaspora, to contribute towards nation-building.

Okonjo-Iweala said this during her unveiling, as the “Diaspora Icon,” a fallout of the recently held Maiden National Diaspora Merit Award in Abuja.

The Director-General, WTO, said the diaspora is capable of doing so much for Nigeria, and it goes beyond remittances to skills and knowledge transfer, especially as most countries of the world are fast embracing technology and the digital era.

Okonjo-Iweala added that she was elated and humbled for being selected as a “Diaspora Icon,” and commended the commission for the work it has been doing over the years, in terms of diaspora engagement.

The NiDCOM Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said the award given to the WTO Director-General was in recognition of her selfless service to Nigeria and humanity.

The Diaspora Icon Award is one of the categories, given at the National Diaspora Day celebrations and the National Diaspora Merit Award, held in Abuja, Nigeria, on July 26th.
