Experts in environmental management and residents in Anambra state have called on government at all levels to be more proactive so as to find more effective and long lasting solution to the yearly flood disaster in Nigeria.
Experts in environment management and residents made the call when ait.live visited some of flood prone areas in Anambra state south east Nigeria to ascertain government and the peoples preparedness ahead of the impending disaster amidst the Covid 19 pandemic.
Though the land is still dry in most parts visited, experts say the gradual rise of water level of the River Niger is an indication that the River will soon overflow its bank and coastal communities submerged by flood.
Ait.live gathered that the state government has perfected plans to create more holding camps to evacuate victims in the event of flooding, residents of coastal communities however want the federal government and relevant authorities to make proper use of predictions and clear blocked drainages and water channels
One of the effects of the gradual rise of the River Niger is the early harvest of farm produce by farmers in the would be affected areas.
