Some Abuja-based lawyers have called on the Inspector general of police, Kayode Egbetokun, to intervene in the continued detention of an Imo state-based journalist, Chinonso Ubah, who has been in the custody of the Nigerian Police Force, since he was arrested on July 27, 2023.
Counsel for Ubah, Maxwell Opara, leading other lawyers told a news briefing in Abuja that his client’s arrest followed a publication made by him on social media accusing the Imo state governor of masterminding series of murders in the state but wondered why he has neither been charged to court nor granted bail.

One of the 2- count- charge preferred against Chinoso by the Nigerian Police is that Chinonso Uba on or about the 24th day of June 2023 within the jurisdiction of this honorable Court intentionally sent a message by means of computer and social media network accusing Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo stale and Asari Dokubo of killing 100 of Imo Youths and burning houses across the state.
Police said that the publication was with the intent of instigating Imo people and igbo Tribe worldwide against the Governor knowing the said informalion to be false and with intent to cause annoyance.
