Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, is deeply pained by the execution of aid workers in the state, whom he describes as heroes, gruesomely killed in the course of serving humanity.
Zulum’s spokesman, Isa Gusau, in a statement said, the Governor was informed of the execution by the insurgents who released a video which showed five blindfolded aid workers with four of them shot at close range, while one was spared, even though he was also positioned for execution.
The five aid workers were abducted weeks back during a humanitarian mission to support internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The statement said that Governor Zulum mourns and shares the grief of their families and employers; the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Action Against Hunger, Reach International and the International Rescue Committee.
He also condoled the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
The Governor has already directed a government delegation to immediately visit the families of the aid workers, participate in the funeral activities and to pay condolence visits to other affected humanitarian partners.

The statement also hinted that Zulum wants fresh ideas that would bring the insurgency to an end.
He reiterates his call that the insurgents should stop the killings that have ravaged the state for 11 years.
