Speaker of Nigeria's House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas,

The Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has explained the rationale behind the increase in the number of Standing Committees in the 10th Assembly from 109 to 130.

The speaker, who made this known at an interactive session with journalists covering the National Assembly, said the increase was to enhance efficiency in the delivery of legislative activities in the House of Representatives for the growth and development of the country.

Tajudeen Abbas noted that the Committees on Monitoring, Evaluation, and Implementation recently created would ensure that every standing committee lives up to its responsibility and monitors the implementation of the 10th Assembly legislative agenda.

Abbas maintained that some committees were overburdened with too many responsibilities and, as such, were unable to effectively carry out oversight functions for all the agencies under their purview.

The speaker assured journalists covering the House of Representatives of access to information and regular capacity-building workshops to enhance their reportage of the parliament in line with the principles of objectivity, balance, fairness, and truthfulness.
