Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah has paid an on-the-spot visit to the site of collapsed flyover at the new artisan end of the ever-busy Port Harcourt-Enugu Expressway, Monday.
The flyover which connects the highbrow Independence Layout area of Enugu city with the fast-developing Goshen Estate, Premier Layout, Dunamis Church and the new Artisan Market, reportedly collapsed early Monday morning, with no casualty as artisans and residents were yet to come out for the day’s activities.
Two lorries said to be conveying goods which were on the bridge when the incident occurred were not that lucky, as the impact affected them, though their
drivers and conductors, escaped unhurt.
Already, one lane of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway has been blocked by the debris of the collapsed overhead bridge, crippling the free flow of traffic and forcing motorists to divert through alternative routes.

Governor Mbah is worried about the plight of travellers using the Expressway with the traffic gridlock and difficulty being experienced in accessing alternative routes to continue their journey.

Mbah notes that the incident of the bridge collapse brings to light the fault lines in the model of Federal structure being practiced in Nigeria, calling for a rejig of the system.
Eyewitnesses and government officials at the scene of the collapsed flyover expressed concerns especially on possible ways to restore immediate free flow of traffic on the highway.
As at the time of this report, officials of the Federal and Enugu State Ministries of Works including the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency were on ground to access the situation, while security operatives and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps were seen assisting road users plying the alternative routes.
