The Vice-Chancellor of Federal University, Gusau, Professor Mu’azu Abubakar, has appealed to the parents of the twelve remaining abducted female students who are still in captivity to be patient, as the security agencies are doing their best to rescue them and bring them back safely.

The Vice-Chancellor made the call while updating journalists on the current state of the abduction of the female students of the institution at their off-campus hostels recently at Sabon Gida Community, in Bugundu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Northwest Nigeria.

This is the first time the Vice-Chancellor will be addressing journalists since the abduction of the students, including a protocol officer, from the Sabon Gida community, a few metres away from the university,  as well as some construction workers within the institution.

He, however, clarified that twenty-five students were abducted and that thirteen have been rescued so far, while twelve are still in captivity.

He said that the security forces are working assiduously to ensure their safe rescue.

The Vice-Chancellor also disclosed that nine construction workers were abducted; three have regained freedom, while six are still with the abductors.

He appealed to the parents to be patient, as the university’s management is working with security agencies, to ensure that the remaining students are rescued unhurt.

He blamed bad societal attitudes and behaviour as responsible for the state of insecurity, saying that for the country to overcome these challenges, it requires attitudinal change, on the part of Nigerians.

Lack of hostel accommodation for female students, and a perimeter fence at the Federal University, Gusau, may have exposed the students to the incessant abduction by suspected terrorists in Zamfara State, Northwest Nigeria.
