Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar,

Following the fresh outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas, the Nigerian government has urged the warring countries to embrace peace.

In a press statement issued by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, he urged both Israel and Hamas to prioritize the safety of civilians and give room for humanitarian considerations.

According to the statement, the Nigerian government called for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue

The statement read in full: “The Federal Government of Nigeria is deeply concerned about the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas in the early hours of Saturday, 7th October, 2023 and calls for de-escalation and ceasefire.

The cycle of violence and retaliation that the current escalation has assumed only serves to perpetuate an unending cycle of pain and suffering for the civilian population that bear the brunt of every conflict.

The Federal Government of Nigeria, therefore, calls on both sides to exercise restraint, prioritize the safety of civilians, and give room for humanitarian considerations.

We are therefore calling for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue.”

Meanwhile, Israel has been trying to regain full control of territory, a day after Hamas attack.

Israel military says there are still eight “points of engagement” in its territory. Israel is attacking targets in the Gaza Strip and has advised people there to take shelter

The air strikes have killed more than 250 people, Palestinian officials say. In Israel, 250 people have been killed, and dozens of Israelis have been taken hostage

On Saturday morning, Hamas launched a wave of rocket attacks, and fighters stormed into Israel, in the biggest escalation in decades
