Nigeria’s House of Representatives on Tuesday resolved to investigate alleged mismanagement of funds in the national health insurance scheme as well as irregularities in the operations of the programme.
This followed a motion on the floor of the House raising concerns over the huge funds invested in the scheme with little or no results.
According to the lawmakers, records show that only a negligible 3% of citizens in the formal sector have access to health insurance, leaving over 170 million Nigerians without Health Insurance.

They are further concerned that the programme has been fraught with poor service delivery by the HMOs as well as low-quality services on the part of the healthcare service providers.
The House immediately mandated its Committee on Healthcare Services to investigate the matter and report back in 4 weeks.
