Operations at the Magaret Ekpo International Airport Calabar were hindered on Monday as Aviation workers’ unions protest Federal Government plans to concession airports across the country.
The workers’ unions under the umbrella of National Union of Air Transport Employees, Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, ANAP and the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association, ATSSSAN faulted the planned concession of the country’s airport; arguing it was without due diligence.
The workers also kicked against any arrangement of concession without addressing paying proper consideration to issues of their welfare and those of retirees.

The workers led by Comrade Peter Omene, expressed concern that the arrangement will lead to massive job loss.
This was as the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Airport Chapter, Rose Ndaekong, noted that the proposed concession will erode Nigeria’s roadmap for the development of the aviation sector.
Some of the airports planned for concession include the facilities in Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port-Harcourt as part of the privatization policy of the Federal Government.
