Some aggrieved Non Teaching staff of the University of Calabar who were employed by the erstwhile Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Zana Akpagu since 2019, have staged a peaceful protest over their unpaid salaries for years.

Speaking with our correspondent at the scene of the protest, some of the aggrieved staff including Grace Ogbegu, Emmanuel Ayeni and Joseph Apih, said they were duly employed by the past administration of Professor Akpagu but the current administration of Professor Florence Obi has declined to capture and payroll them for four years now.

The protesting non teaching staff who further called on the federal government and the management of the institution to come to their aid, added that they have all gone through the due process of documentation.

While responding to the demands of the protesting staff of the institution, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Florence Obi, said the management of the institution cannot solve their problem as the solution was not within the institution.

Professor Obi stressed that the management of the institution does not have the power to employ and payroll staff.

Recall that in March 2022 and in February this year, the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions had summoned Professor Obi, over the institution’s 2019/2020 employees’ unpaid salaries.
