Suspected militants have attacked the Calabar Correctional Center in the Cross River State capital, South-South Nigeria.
The gunmen were said to have come from the creeks close to the Correctional facility located on Afokang Street by Jebbs in Calabar city.
The incident which happened at about 6 pm on Wednesday night, reportedly caused panic in the area with residents scampering for safe zones following heavy gunshots.
The Public Relations Officer of the Command, Effangha in an interview confirmed the incident, noting that the attack left one unnamed officer dead.
He said the officer was at his duty post with others when the suspected gunmen struck, contrary to speculations that the deceased was targeted.

Effangha said investigations into the incident had commenced and the Controller of the Calabar Correctional Services is leaving no stone unturned in getting at the root of what happened.
He assured residents of the area to go about their normal businesses without fear, but should always inform security agents of suspected movements in their area.
There is no information on whether any inmate escaped from the facility during the attack.
The Police in Calabar is yet to speak on the incident.
