Following the public outcry by Nigerians on the increment of electricity tariff in Nigeria which took effect from September 1, the Public Relations Officer of the Electricity Distribution Company in Port Harcourt, John Onyi, has cleared the air on how the increment will be implemented.

Reacting to AIT’s enquiries, Onyi said the increased tariff would be on pay-as-you-go basis, hinting that it is not meant to inflict pains on Nigerians.

While explaining the rationale behind the increment in electricity tariff, he stated that groups A, B, and C will pay the increased rate based on how many hours of power given to them while those who get power for 4 to 5 hours daily will pay the old tariff.

Onyi also spoke on the issue of non-availability of prepaid meters.

The PHED covers power distribution to the South-South States of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Rivers which are rich in oil and gas production.
