Deputy Inspector- General of Police, DIG, assigned for election monitoring in the Edo State, Oyebade Adeleye, has assured of a hitch-free governorship election in the state come Saturday, September 19.

The DIG at a press conference held in preparation for the Edo State governorship election said the police and other security agencies have resolved to protect the democratic process by providing an enabling environment and level playing field for all the contenders.

Elections in Nigeria have often been marred by plethora of malpractices and violence.

With Edo State experiencing these challenges, the police, speaking through its Deputy Inspector-General, said it has resolved to improve on them and make the 2020 Edo State governorship election more inclusive, more credible, and a reference to future elections in Nigeria.

The DIG while acknowledging the synergy with other security agencies in ensuring hitch-free polls further said adequate security will be provided for the Independent National Electoral Commission staff, electoral materials, the electorates, candidates, and other key players.

The police is, however, warning those who have sinister plans towards the election to desist from it or face the wrath of the law.
