About nine months after the commencement of the first-ever rehabilitation work on the New Makurdi Bridge across River Benue, the contractor handling the project has reportedly abandoned work subjecting commuters to managing one lane of the ever-busy road that connects the northern part of the country to the east and west.
Drivers who ply the route are, therefore, calling on federal authorities to impress on the contractor to return to the site.
Since rehabilitation work commenced on the new Makurdi Bridge in January, it has been partially shut down to enable the contractor to work on one carriage lane at a time.
The work which was scheduled to last for three months has more exceeded this timeframe and worse still, the project seems to have been completely abandoned as there is no trace of the contractor or his equipment on the site.
A visit to the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing office at the Federal Secretariat in Makurdi did not yield any results as the Federal Controller of Works was not on seat neither was anyone who could speak on his behalf.

Since its construction as far back as 1976, the New Makurdi Bridge has had no semblance of rehabilitation until this latest attempt.
