Zamfara State Government is embarking on a campaign against climate change with aggressive planting of over 10, 000 trees.
Governor Bello Mohammed, who flagged off the exercise in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of the state, said tree planting is necessary to provide shade for the people.
The Commissioner for Education, Ibrahim Abdullahi, who flagged off the tree planting exercise on behalf of Governor Mohammed at Talata Mafara Local Government Area, said plans are underway to introduce economic trees to create jobs and business opportunities for the unemployed youth.
He observed that the importance of tree planting can never be over-emphasized, given the change in climate, of which cutting down of trees is one of the factors responsible for and resulting in global warming.
Abdullahi called on the residents of the state to support the exercise by planting and nurturing trees in their houses and the various communities to key into the fight against climate change in the country.
The Chairman of the Zamfara State Basic Education Board, Abubakar Maradun, hinted that the board will reward the school that has done well in tree planting in the state.

The tree planting exercise is an annual event which will be carried out in two phases during the early and later parts of the rainy season.
