As Nigeria marks her 60th Independence Anniversary, experts have scored the environment sector low in areas of infrastructure development and disaster management.
Most of them who spoke to AIT said Incessant fuel and gas tanker explosions as well as increased building collapse were worrisome trend.
The first storey building in Nigeria in Badagry, Lagos was built in 1845 to suit European architectural design.
175 years after, the building is still standing strong.
Many Nigerians are therefore worried post independent structures and indeed some buildings under construction today in the country give way easily.
Another major challenge bedeviling the Nigerian environment sector in the last sixty years apart from incessant building collapse; is the perennial problem of poor road infrastructure.
The Badagry expressway which connects Nigeria to Benin Republic in the Southwest as well as the historical site in Badagry is in deplorable condition and begging for attention from the Federal Government.
But despite these challenges, a few environment experts said Nigeria has made remarkable progress in fulfilling her obligations to international treaties like the Montreal Protocol on ozone depleting substances and the climate change treaty.
They however called for improvement in waste recycling, genuine efforts to the clean up’ of Ogoni land in the Niger Delta region and an aggressive effort by government to recover the country’s fast depleting forest zones.
