Taraba State AIDS Control Agency, TACA says at least 45,000 persons are currently on treatment for Human Immuno Virus, and Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome, HIV/AIDS in the north eastern state, and 68% of them are women.
TACA Director-General, Dr. Garba Danjuma made this known after an enlightenment campaign which was part of activities to mark the 2023 World AIDS Day.
Wife of Taraba State Governor, Agyin Kefas who was among dignitaries who joined the campaign, assured of her support for the cause calling on community and religious leaders to always engage in the sensitisation against the disease. She also advocated for increased screening for the disease especially among the vulnerable population of women and children.
The prevalence HIV/AIDS has however dropped from 10.5% to 2.9% in Taraba State, this data is based on the 2018 prevalence survey by the Federal Government. TACA says it hopes the prevalence will be lower when another survey is soon taken, as figures in the weekly yield report submitted to the office has dropped. Dr. Danjuma it is a call to action, as the State gears towards eradicating HIV/AIDs-related deaths by 2030, hence the need for intensified sensitisation of members of the public.
