ECOWAS Leaders Resolve To Strengthen Democracy, Tackle Insecurity During Extraordinary Summit In Abuja

A meeting of Leaders from the Economic Community Of West African States, ECOWAS has ended in Abuja with a resolve by participants to consolidate democracy and good governance as well as tackle security challenges plaguing the sub-region.

In a communique released after the extraordinary summit attended by nine West African leaders, the bloc pledged to restore citizens’ confidence in democracy while condemning attempts to change the government in Guinea Bissau.

The ECOWAS leaders also stressed the need for the Junta in four West African countries to get back to the barracks

Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, who is also ECOWAS chairman had told his colleagues that tackling poverty, inequality and other concerns of the people is essential to strengthening democracy in the West African Sub-region

ECOWAS commission’s president, Omar Alieu Touray had also expressed concerns about military authorities in Niger Republic which he said, had dug in, without any signs of agreeing to proposals to return the country to constitutional order.

The outgoing president of Liberia, George Wewh who was at his last ECOWAS summit following his unsuccessful re-election bid, received commendation for conceding defeat in the recently concluded presidential election in his country.
