NAPTIP Partners With US Government To Fight Human Trafficking

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP Says it will improve it’s anti trafficking efforts using evidence based approaches.

Director General of the Agency, Fatima Waziri-Azi said this in Abuja, at the launch of promoting evidence-based anti-trafficking efforts in Nigeria.

Statistics from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in persons, NAPTIP shows that 2019- 2022, analysis revealed that 61% of human trafficking in Nigeria happens internally and 39% across the borders.

Data from the Innovations for Poverty Action, IPA also says an estimated 75,000 to 100,000 Nigerians are trafficked every year.

In order to further stem the ever worsening scourge of trafficking in persons in the country, NAPTIP and IPA signed a 4-year memorandum of understanding with IPA in may, 2023.

During the launch of the project in Abuja, NAPTIP’s DG Fatima waziri Azi said the new partnership will allow NAPTIP to develop rigorous research of actions against trafficking in persons.

Country director of IPA, Funmi Ayeni said knowing the role poverty plays in human trafficking, the project which is funded by the US department of state will have an embeded lab within NAPTIP to help in building NAPTIP’s capacity in the fight.

Nigeria has remained on tier 2, on the US Department’s Trafficking in Persons ranking since 2022.
