KWARA STATE

Journalists and other media practitioners across the three Kwara State-owned media houses —Herald Newspaper, Radio Kwara, and Kwara State Television—have embarked on a two-day warning strike to press home their demand for a better working environment, unpaid weigh-in allowance, and the need to be recognised and treated as essential workers.

The angry workers, led by the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Kwara TV Chapel, Suleiman Gobir and his counterpart from the radio arm, Abdulhameed Alaye, in the early hours of Tuesday, barricaded the major entrance into the media houses, insisting they could no longer bear the hardship with their duties, and calling on Governor Adulrahman Abdulraqaz, to address the issues.

One of the General Managers, Kayode Aremu, attempted to smuggle in some level 17 officials to man the station but was resisted by the striking workers.

Reacting to the development, the General Manager of Radio Kwara, Kayode Aremu, maintained that the request of the workers is already receiving the needed attention, despite budgetary issues.

For now, normal activities in the affected media organisations have crumbled due to the industrial action.
