Senate to regulate internship, outsource in tertiary hospitals

The Senate has asked the Committee of Chief Medical Directors, (CMDs) to come forward with a policy proposal, that will enable it to formulate appropriate legislation, that will streamline the condition of service for temporary professional staff and those on outsource in Nigeria’s tertiary hospitals.

The Senate through its Committee on Health gave the directive, when the Chairman of the Committee of Chief Medical Directors, appeared before it to defend the budget for 2021.

Speaking at the meeting, the Chairman of the Senate panel, Yahaya Oloriegbe, said that the policy proposal will be useful for the purpose of appropriation.

He said such laws will also help to eliminate situations, where students graduate but can’t find a place for houseman ship.

The Panel Chairman said that the proposed legal framework, will also eliminate abuse as well as sanitize outsource in the system.

In response, the Chairman of the Committee of Chief Medical Directors, Jaf Momoh, welcomed the need for such laws.

He says “If we can settle the issue of internship and outsource by law, history will not for get you.

Many hospitals are doing well, but outsource keeps digging a hole. There’s a need to have a law”, he said.

The Senate panel gave the Committee of CMDs six weeks to submit the proposal for it to work on.
