Nigeria’s Minister Of Environment Visits Ogoni To Inspect Projects

In line with the recommendations of the United Nations Environmental Programme, UNEP, report on the provision of portable water for the people of Ogoni, Rivers State in the oil rich South South region, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas has commissioned water projects in Ogoni land.

Speaking during the occasion, the Minister reiterated the Federal government’s commitment in the implementation of the Ogoni clean-up projects.

Abbas was on a two days working visit to Rivers state to inspect ongoing remediation project sites and to commission water projects in almost all the communities in Ogoni land.

After an inspection tour to various remediation sites, the Minister who expressed satisfaction with the level of work done so far, said the Ogoni cleanup project was very key to the Federal government and that the people of the communities will be carried along in the scheme of things.

The Environment Minister assured people of Ogoni land who have suffered environmental pollution and degradation for decades, that the Federal government will ensure that the polluted environment was remedied and restored, but called for their total support.

On his part the Hyprep project coordinator, Professor Nanenibari Zabbey said one of the Commission’s core mandate was to provide water for the Ogoni people in line with the United Nations Environmental Programme, UNEP, report.
