The hope of politicians having more Senatorial districts and Federal Constituencies created by the electoral umpire for future elections has been dashed.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmud Yakubu dashed the hopes of politicians when told the House of Representatives Committee on electoral matters that the process is not feasible for now.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mahmud Yakubu, said delineation of more constituencies and senatorial districts cannot be organised by the Commission at the Commission’s Budget defence.

Mahmood informed the Committee that delineation of constituencies can only be feasible if the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 is amended to expand the numbers of existing Senatorial Districts and Federal Constituencies in the Country.

The INEC Chairman further told the Committee that the last constituency delineation exercise was done in 1996 in the thirty-six states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT which divided Nigeria into 109 senatorial districts and 360 federal constituencies.
