Tragedy struck at a local mining site in Bauchi State, North East Nigeria, where four women died when the mining site collapsed.
According to an eyewitness, the women were unable to escape from the site on time.

The devastating incident is not the first of its kind where local miners, who are mostly women and children, will be losing their lives at a mining site in Bauchi State.
In 2023, a mining site in Bar Kudu, in Bogoro Local Government, claimed the lives of three women and injured others.
Mathias Mamaki and his mother, the two survivors of the tragedy, along with Musa who was also at the mining site, gave an account of what happened.
Musa said the high level of poverty was a major reason that pushed hundreds of people to troop to the mining site to dig monoxide to earn a living.
One of the victim’s husband, Iliya Gambar, said the unfortunate incident was shocking.
It was a really sad moment for the families of the deceased.
To many, the sad incident will serve as a reminder of the dangers that come with working on a local illegal mining site.
Authorities have been advised to provide safety measures that will, prevent future recurrence.
