The Katsina State House of Assembly has passed the 2020 Child Protection Bill, 17 years after it was presented to the assembly.
The bill when passed into law, will seek to provide adequate care and protection for the children, especially in the areas of basic education, protection against sexual harassment by teachers, adequate care for the less privileged, reduced menace of drug abuse, underage marriage, same sex marriage and other social vices, in the society.
The chairman of the committee and the member representing Kaita Constituency, Nuhu Gafia, said that the committee painstakingly made wide consultations with relevant stakeholders, to ensure that all the grey areas objected to by some religious leaders, were strengthened.

He added that, when the bill is passed into law, children in Katsina State will be adequately protected, considering the fact that children are the bedrock for the development of any society.
After the adoption of the report and passage of the bill, the Deputy Speaker, Dalhatu Tafoki, who presided over the plenary, directed the Clerk of the House to produce a clean copy, for onward transmission to the governor’s assent.
