The Federal Government has directed the Senate of the University of Ibadan to convene a special meeting for the purpose of selecting one of its members as Acting Vice Chancellor for a tenure of not more than 6 months. The nominee must not be a candidate in the on-going process for the selection of a new Vice Chancellor, for recommendation to the Governing Council for appointment.
The Federal Government through the Minister of Education in a letter signed by the Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Ramon Yusuf directs the Governing Council of the University to shift its meeting earlier scheduled for 10am on Monday, November 30, 2020 to discuss the issue of appointment of a new Vice Chancellor, to later in the afternoon on the same day.

The Federal Government says this has become necessary as resolution of the impasse in the process of appointing a new Vice Chancellor for the University of Ibadan and to restore peace and harmony for the discharge of the University’s core mandate.
The letter noted that in view of the fact that the tenure of the incumbent Vice Chancellor, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka expires on Monday, November 30, 2020 it is pertinent for the Governing Councti to meet in the afternoon of Monday, November 30 to consider and approve the appointment of the Senate nominee as Acting Vice Chancellor.
The letter further stated that following the appointment of an Acting Vice Chancellor, the Out-going Vice-Chancellor should hand over to the Acting Vice Chancellor possibly on Monday or latest by Tuesday, December 1, 2020.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council has also been directed by the letter to attend a meeting with the Minister of Education in his office in Abuja on Wednesday December 2, 2020 at 11am for briefing following the ministerial directives on the resolution of the impasse.
