The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has announced a ban in the registration, sale and consumption of alcoholic drinks in sachets due to potential health risks associated with packaging method.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Moji Adeyeye, in a news conference in Abuja on Monday revealed that the potential health risks associated with the packaging method, particularly among the younger population, was huge.

For many young Nigerians, sachet-sized alcoholic drinks have become synonymous with convenience and economic accessibility.

The World Health Organization, however warns that children who drink alcohol are more likely to use drugs, get bad grades, suffer injuries or death, and engage in risky sexual activity.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Moji Adeyeye, in a meeting with journalists in Abuja said she was worried about the potential health risks associated with sachet packaging, especially among the younger ones hence the move to stop registration and sales of such products.

NAFDAC DG said the agency was actively working in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to enforce the prohibition across the country and to ensure compliance within the beverage industry.

The ban comes as part of NAFDAC’s broader efforts to regulate the production and sale of alcoholic beverages, with focus on mitigating health risks and safeguarding the well-being of the Nigerians
