The Economic Commission of West African States, ECOWAS has lifted sanctions imposed on some of its member-states in the wake of military takeover of democratically elected governments.
The affected MEMBER-STATES are BURKINA FASO, GUINEA MALI AND NIGER REPUBLIC. The sanctions have been lifted on humanitarian grounds. This therefore does not affect political sanctions which prevent the military leaders of the affected countries from participating in meetings of the Authority of Heads of State and Government.

The Authority which took the decision at an emergency meeting convened by its Chairman and Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu invites leadership of the affected countries to attend technical and security related meetings of the sub-regional body.
The Authority urges the counties to reconsider their decision to leave the sub-regional body after serving notice of the intention to withdraw their membership that will take effect next year.
