Reports from the Nigerian National Assembly indicate that the country’s upper chamber, the Senate was on Tuesday thrown into darkness after a power outage caused by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company.

The development has affected the commencement of the day’s proceedings as the lawmakers milled around the legislative premises awaiting the power company to restore electricity supply.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio who later appealed for patience from his colleagues as the technical department was working on ensuring steady power supply in the Nine offices on the fourth floor of the Senate wing affected, and still have no power.

The Senate is said to be contemplating a postponement of plenary if the power outage persists.

Shortly before going to Press, ait.live can confirm that Plenary had commenced at the Senate chamber and power restored on the floor.

Nigeria has experienced terrible power supply challenges with persistent outages since January 2024 due to what experts say is frequent grid collapses in the oil and gas rich West African country.

The situation is worsened by extreme heat as temperature hover above 37 degrees in some cities in Nigeria.
