Trouble looms as 13 Ondo lawmakers disown Speaker’s endorsement of Aiyedatiwa

Some members of the Ondo State House of Assembly say they have not passed any resolution to endorse the incumbent Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa for November’s election as purportedly announced by the Speaker, Olamide Oladiji.

The lawmakers numbering 13 in a statement they jointly signed and made available to reporters, said the House of Assembly operates on democratic principles, and would formally take a collective decision, follow due process and the relevant laws governing the State.

The Speaker had during the official declaration of Governor Aiyedatiwa to run for the 2024 governorship election, said 18 members of the Assembly have declared their support for him to emerge as candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC and to go ahead to win the polls in November.

The 13 lawmakers said the declaration by Mr. Speaker is untrue, misleading, parliamentary, and, to say the least, ridiculous. They insist that at no point did the Ondo State House of Assembly deliberate upon the governorship ambition of any of the numerous aspirants that have indicated their interests to contest for the Governorship election, let alone agree to support any particular aspirant.

According to them, the Speaker lacks the moral and legal authorities to speak or pledge support for any governorship aspirant on behalf of the Assembly without the explicit consent of members.

They noted that the Speaker has, by his unconventional and false public declaration, misrepresented the honourable Assembly, and in so doing, brought the 10th Ondo State House of Assembly into disrepute, needless controversies and breached our confidence in his leadership. They therefore passed a vote of no-confidence in the leadership of the Speaker.
