Benue State University lecturers suspend strike

BEUNE

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, at Benue State University Makurdi, has suspended its indefinite strike after six weeks.

The decision was made public in a statement issued by the chairman and secretary of the association, Kwagfan Tarnongo and Terrumun Gajir

The lecturers began the strike on February 1, 2024, to demand the Implementation and payment of accrued arrears from 2021, 2022, and 2023 promotions. the implementation and payment of accrued arrears of annual incremental steps and April 2023 salary arrears, payment of the shortfall in the salaries of staff of the College of Health Sciences and payment of earned academic and sundry allowances among other demands.

The statement says the union met on Tuesday and was briefed on the efforts of the Benue State Government to resolve the crisis, which include a tripartite agreement between the Benue State Government, the Benue State University Administration, and ASUU.

The agreement addresses the issues that led to the strike and, for which, the state government assured the agreement will be fully implemented.

The union said the personal intervention Governor Hyacinth Alia, his personal appeal and promise to address the lecturers grievances of also persuaded them to suspend the strike.
