The National Agricultural Seeds Council, NASC, has reviewed, validated, and adopted a policy document on seeds production and management that would serve as a reference point in identifying varieties.
Speaking at a one-day ‘Stakeholders’ Review and Validation Workshop on the draft in Abuja, tagged “National Descriptors for Selected Varieties of Maize, Rice and Soybean”, the NASC Director-General, Philip Ojo, explained that the adoption of the document will enhance production and management of seed fields while assisting in accurately and appropriately reporting and identifying seed varieties.
The purpose of seed certification is to maintain and make available to farmers high-quality and genetically pure seeds of superior cultivars. This is why the NASC is insisting on the production and distribution of Good quality seeds.
The NASC maintained that document will help in appropriately and correctly differentiating one variety from another.

The Council called for the collaboration of all relevant agencies in the advancement of crop varieties characterisation as the government cannot do it alone.
